Privacy and security is equal to Mastodon. #deletegoogle 👁️
@gdroid Love seeing the progress on G-Droid and the Mastodon integration is awesome – congratulations!
One important note though: Mastodon is entirely public; there’s nothing private about it. It’s important that we don’t conflate protocols that encourage better social communication methods (and discourage abusive behaviour) with those that mathematically protect privacy. Mastodon is awesome, it’s just not private ;)
@gdroid @aral But all servers that received a copy can technically retain a copy? Mastodon will honor the delete request, but there have already been modified instances that don't respect the privacy settings. Honoring the deletion is up to the receiving instance, which the sender has very little control over.
If messages were end-to-end encrypted, we could talk about privacy.
The last thing I’m sure any of us would want is for someone to read “Mastodon = privacy and security” and to send a DM thinking it was private and secure when it wasn’t. Especially if the consequences of that action might be dire for them (eg., prosecuted minority, activist, etc.)
Yes right. What I wanted to say by 'Privacy and security is equal to Mastodon' was: It is as private and secure as Mastodon. Or to say it in a different way: The G-Droid app has no additional features in these regards and uses the existing federated network. G-Droid does not have control over logins, accounts, toots, creation, deletion, etc. ✌️😁
The social network of the future: No ads, no corporate surveillance, ethical design, and decentralization! Own your data with Mastodon!
